Rap Song of the Week breaks down the new hip-hop tracks you need to hear every Friday. Check out the full playlist here. This week, Nigo reunites Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Rocky on “Lost & Found Freestyle 2019.” Back in July 2018, longtime friends Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Rocky teased an impending project called WANG$AP in the video for their freestyle “Potato Salad.” Since the duo had name-dropped the collaboration twice before, fans were understandably excited to hear a full album from the sartorial rappers. However, Tyler immediately splashed cold water on the idea, tweeting he was going to “kill Rocky” for getting people’s hopes up. According to the LA native, all he wanted to do was rap over Monica’s 2003 classic, “Knock Knock.” Since then, Tyler and Rocky have linked up...
A song of joyful defiance. Hans Zimmer took a moment to honor a Ukrainian pianist during his London concert earlier this week. Pausing his own performance at the O2 Arena, the composer showed a video for the audience depicting the young musician named Alex, who refused to stop playing the main theme to 2010’s Inception when air raid sirens began going off in a Lviv subway station. National Geographic photographer John Stanmeyer captured the moment in a Lviv subway station and posted the video on social media. “When bomb sirens began, police asked everyone to move inside the railway station,” wrote Stanmeyer in the Instagram caption. “Alex @alexpian_official wouldn’t stop, playing his piano louder against the air raid warning. His friend joined with the most calming pink nails. A simple, ov...
TRIVIUM singer and guitarist Matthew Heafy has shared another song from “Rashomon”, the long-awaited album from his IBARAKI project. Watch the video for the song “Rōnin”, which features MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE singer Gerard Way and EMPEROR frontman Ihsahn, below. “‘A rōnin is a masterless warrior,” states Heafy. “The final two full compositions on ‘Rashomon’ see a significant shift musically. The album as a whole — with the exception of the intro and outro — is actually presented in chronological order of earliest written to latter-most. The actual guitar and bass tracks are a time-capsule of sorts in that their parts — on the final album — is actually from the year they were tracked.” He continues: “One can begin to see t...
DOROTHY, the band led by Hungarian-born vocalist/writer Dorothy Martin, will release a new album, “Gifts From The Holy Ghost”, on April 22 via Roc Nation. She has also shared her anthemic new track “Black Sheep” — an homage to her fans and a rallying cry for unity: “we are blood, we are family,” Dorothy breaks curses, going toe-to-toe with the blistering guitar riffs. “Gifts From The Holy Ghost” was born from a sense of divine urgency, it is her most bombastic and gloriously, victorious rock and roll work yet. Each song built on triumph—the album is a healing and remedial experience, made to unify listeners and point them towards a life full of purpose. Martin‘s life changed forever when she was forced to face death on her tour bus some...
ZZ TOP has reached back to its very early days with the first track to be released from their forthcoming “Raw” album, out July 22 from Shelter Records through BMG. “Brown Sugar” was a key cut on the very appropriately titled ZZ TOP‘s first album that was released in January of 1971. Available today, “Brown Sugar” is the opening track on “Raw”, which itself is an homage to the band’s early days. ZZ TOP‘s “Brown Sugar”, penned by Billy Gibbons, should not be mistaken for THE ROLLING STONES song of the same title, the latter of which was actually released three months after ZZ TOP‘s first album. “Raw” was recorded and filmed for the Grammy-nominated Netflix documentary “That Little Ol’...
SCORPIONS have shared an eight-minute track-by-track breakdown of the band’s 19th studio album, “Rock Believer”, by singer Klaus Meine. Check it out below. The LP was released on February 25. Asked in a recent interview with Chile’s Radio Futuro what fans can expect to hear on “Rock Believer”, Meine said: “Well, you can expect an album that is dedicated to all the rock believers in the world. And we’re very excited after all these years. We thought, when you think about all the touring we did the last 10 years, after the release of ‘Return To Forever’ in 2015, the time was right to go back into the studio, to write new material, to write new songs and check out if the creativity is still working. The big aim was, the goal was to m...
The Gaslight Anthem are returning to “full time status,” with plans for a new album and extensive tour. The band’s frontman, Brian Fallon, shared the news in a social media post on Monday. “We’ll be announcing a lot of tour dates in the next couple of days,” Fallon teased. “We’re also beginning to write new songs for what will be our sixth LP. We’re looking forward to the future and seeing you all again.” Following The Gaslight Anthem’s initial hiatus in 2015, Fallon and co. temporarily revived the band in 2018 to embark on a brief tour celebrating the 10th anniversary of their album The ’59 Sound. It seems the band had initially considered a similar anniversary tour around their album Handwritten, but are now opting for something entirely new. Advertisement Related Video Earlier this year...
In the roiling summer heat of 2021, Philadelphia hardcore act Soul Glo took to their practice space to record the 12 songs that would form Diaspora Problems. The material was conceptualized over a five-year period and harnessed in true punk fashion, under tumultuous and budget-conscious conditions. In many ways, Soul Glo have followed the tried-and-true punk trajectory, gradually building a fanbase via touring, DIY releases, and EPs. It’s culminated with the band inking a deal with storied punk label Epitaph Records, home to legends such as Bad Religion, Rancid, Social Distortion, and many more. But Soul Glo are far from your average hardcore band. With predominantly Black band members, the band is inherently distinguished among a scene long dominated by whiteness — a topic Pierce Jordan d...
Not even a superstar like Willie Nelson was spared from the effects of Texas’ new restrictive voting law. According to reporting by the Associated Press, the iconic singer and his wife had particular difficulty obtaining absentee ballots in order to vote in the state’s primary election earlier this month, which took place on March 1st. Nelson’s wife, Annie D’Angelo-Nelson, told the Austin American-Statesman that she and her husband had to apply for the ballots twice, with their first attempt being rejected because of the new law’s stringent identification requirements. Thankfully, the couple was able to work through the mix-up and apply again, but D’Angelo-Nelson commented that the possibility of other voters with less determination and understanding of the absentee requirements being reje...
