Oso Oso: Sore Thumb

The liturgy of Oso Oso is built from finding the perfect view, feeling sand between your toes, and watching the sun rise. You know the motto: Life Is Good. Though frontman Jade Lilitri culls his sound from the malcontent and often misogynistic legacy of Long Island emo, his lyrics fawn more than they fight, staring doe-eyed at the universe. In his native Long Beach, New York, it’s easy to find the Biblical in the everyday—the vastness of the Atlantic is never more than a mile away, and the town was devastated by Hurricane Sandy only a decade ago. The sea is a running motif in his work, and on Oso Oso’s fourth record, Sore Thumb, it’s a fatal mission: “Captain of my own Titanic,” he sings on opener “Computer Exploder,” trapped in a fated battle against his own worst impulses. If emo had its...

MESHUGGAH’s TOMAS HAAKE Always Counts Steps While Walking Up Staircases

In a new interview with Elliott Fullam of Little Punk People, MESHUGGAH‘s Tomas Haake was asked if he naturally keeps count of everyday tasks since he’s a drummer. He responded: “Not really. I do have one weird thing, though. I don’t necessarily see the connection with me being a drummer, but maybe there is. And that’s… I really can’t walk up staircases without counting the steps. And for a while, actually, I used to count my steps when I was just walking too. But that would be the only thing where I have some kind of weird OCD that kind of kicks in. But you can ask me, all the staircases that I use in life, that I’ve used more than a couple times, you could ask me, and I would tell you the exact amount of steps for all of them. Anything that’...
