Black Coffee Opens Up About Near-Fatal Accident On the “Most Pivotal Day” of His Life

It’s no secret that Black Coffee has earned his spot in the dance music history books, but speaking candidly on a recent interview, the Grammy-winning artist opened up about how his life was almost cut short decades earlier. Raised in the town of Mthatha, Nelson Mandela’s hometown, the South African superstar says that a brush with fate almost led to his death. During a public gathering celebrating the release of Mandela from prison in 1990, a taxi plowed into the crowd, leading to an injury that caused Coffee to be hospitalized for three months. The scars from the devastating injury were lasting, and he was effectively left unable to use one of his arms due to severe dislocation. Speaking on Steven Bartlett’s The Diary of a CEO podcast, Coffee says the emotional anguish o...

TikTok has already proven to be fertile ground for discovering new talent, and one songwriter is well on his way to a potential super-collaboration after a recent post on the platform. It all started when John Legend issued an open verse challenge on TikTok, sharing lyrics for a song he’s workshopping called “Nervous” and encouraging his followers to follow up his hook with a verse of their own.  One promising South African songwriter, Mthandazo Gatya, responded to the challenge. And he may have dramatically shifted the trajectory of his career. The flow of the Xhosa-speaking artist’s verse wasn’t lost on Legend, nor Black Coffee, who was later tagged into the interaction on Twitter. Given Gatya’s affinity for house music with hi...

Black Coffee and Ami Faku Celebrate South African Heritage With Rework of Apartheid-Era Protest Anthem

“This song symbolizes the gift of music.” That’s how Black Coffee referred to Letta Mbulu and Caiphus Semenya’s “There’s Music In The Air,” a protest anthem for the anti-apartheid movement written by the South African musicians in 1976. Today, alongside fellow South African artist Ami Faku, the Grammy-winning DJ and dance music producer has released his own rework of the historic single via Gallo Record Company. Marked by a spirit-stirring afro-soul arrangement of laid-back percussion rhythms and retro synths, the song is ready-made for sun-drenched strolls and afternoon unwinds. “There’s music in the air / It makes the sorrow go / Let the music take you there / Far from the world you know,” Faku angelically ha...
