Box Office: ‘Encanto’ Eyes $40M-Plus Opening; ‘House of Gucci’ Sewing Up $22M

Hollywood and theater owners have reason to be thankful this holiday season, even if moviegoing has yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. Walt Disney Animation’s musical adventure Encanto is succeeding in luring families back to the multiplex and is looking at a five-day Thanksgiving opening of $40 million or more after grossing $11 million on Black Friday (Nov. 26). Fueled by Latinos and an A CinemaScore, Encanto should boast the top showing of the COVID-19 era for a family title. It is the first major animated studio title to receive an exclusive theatrical window since the pandemic struck in spring 2020 and opens as younger children are authorized to be vaccinated. A Memoir Blue Brings a Text-Free Musical Experience from Halo Infinite Composer

As is the case with many video games published by Annapurna Interactive, there’s nothing quite like A Memoir Blue on the market. The upcoming title developed by Cloisters Interactive will undoubtedly be labeled as “games as art,” “interactive story” and a whole lot of other relatively meaningless subgenres to say that it boasts a unique narrative rather than action-heavy gameplay, but Shelley Chen’s first project as creative director and driving force is still going to catch plenty of people by surprise. For starters, there’s no text or spoken dialog. The entire tale — which happens to be about the ups and downs of a championship-winning swimmer named Miriam — is told entirely through the player’s interactions and song, leaving plenty of space for interpretation and imagination to fill in ...

12 Suspects to Stand Trial in Kim Kardashian West Jewelry Heist

Twelve people will stand trial in Paris over a $10 million jewelry heist targeting Kim Kardashian West in 2016, authorities said Friday (Nov. 19). The reality TV star said she was tied up at gunpoint and locked in a bathroom after armed robbers forced their way into her rented Paris apartment during fashion week. After five years of investigation, investigating judges have ordered the case sent to trial, a judicial official said Friday. The 12 suspects face a range of charges related to the theft. No trial date has been set, and the official would not provide further details. Kardashian West’s French lawyer did not immediately comment. Several suspects have been released from jail pending trial for health reasons, including 68-year-old Yunice Abbas, one of the five men accused of carrying ...

Spears took to Instagram to post two photos of her fiancé: one of him smiling while soaking in a hot tub and a second of him posing on the House of Gucci red carpet. “Ok so my baby stole the show at the premiere of House of Gucci !!!! Sorry to the cast but my baby is [fire emoji] … I’m the photographer on the first one !!!!!” Explore See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Asghari later posted videos of himself posing on the carpet, revealing that he was dressed and styled by Donatella Versace in a smart Versace tuxedo, matching trousers, and a ...

Saweetie Has Some Unfinished Business With Kyle Mooney in New ‘SNL’ Promo

It must be awkward for Saweetie to reunite with her “ex-fiancé” Kyle Mooney on the Saturday Night Live stage. In a new promo for this weekend’s episode, host Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) introduces musical guest Saweetie, who turns and says a cold “hello, Kyle” to the longtime castmember. “Do you two know each other?” his SNL castmate Cecily Strong asks. “We did,” Mooney says. “Until she broke up off our engagement.” Explore Explore Saweetie See latest videos, charts and news See latest videos, charts and news Liu wonders, “Is this going to be a problem?” I guess we’ll have to tune in Saturday night to find out. Richard Vreeland’s Award-Winning Hyper Light Drifter Score is Returning to Vinyl, and Solar Ash is Next

On March 31, 2016, times were simpler. Obama was president. Harambe was alive. Global pandemics were reserved for sci-fi movies. Things were generally going pretty well. To make things even better, that was the day when developer and creative director Alx Preston of Heart Machine released Hyper Light Drifter into the world. An acclaimed and refreshing indie title that paid tribute to classic 16-bit action RPGs, Hyper Light Drifter became an immediate fan favorite and award winner for a number of reasons — particularly the unique and unforgettable score that was equal parts nostalgic and futuristic. Richard Vreeland (better known as Disasterpeace) was the one behind the now-iconic soundtrack, which soon became one of the most sought-after vinyls in the entire industry. At the time, Vreeland...

Jim Cummings’ Public Display of Reflection

Towards the end of The Beta Test, Jim Cummings explodes into a monologue of anger and truth. Those who have seen the writer/director/actor’s other feature films — Thunder Road and The Wolf of Snow Hollow — are familiar with this trademark scene. The reason for the routine display is that Cummings loves public freakouts. Cummings’ latest character, a hotshot Hollywood agent named Jordan Hines, has good reason to erupt. In the midst of planning his wedding, Hines’ agency (aptly named A.P.E.) is trying to sign its biggest client yet. At the same time, Hines has received an invitation to a discreet sexual encounter. Hines’ balancing act is the heart of The Beta Test. In the midst of this character study, the movie tackles toxic masculinity, social media’s lack of privacy concerns and archaic H...

Nice Guys, Like Comedian Josh Johnson, Finish First

Comedian Josh Johnson is multi-talented. Comedian Josh Johnson is a hustler. Comedian Josh Johnson is an optimist. Not being able to figure out which way to start off a conversation about Johnson is a good thing because in this case, all three statements are true. For someone barely scratching the surface of his thirties, Johnson is doing things most comedians can only dream of. These days, he’s both performed on and written for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon while also writing for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. He’s done stand-up on both Comedy Central and Netflix, has a podcast called The Josh Johnson Show that he co-hosts with Logan Nielsen, and is currently state-hopping on the Back to Abnormal Tour also with Noah. Oh, and his mixtape Elusive is available now, be...

House of Ashes Composer Jason Graves Continues His Frightful Work on The Dark Pictures Anthology

As players of Supermassive Games’ previous titles — like Until Dawn, Man of Medan, and Little Hope — know, there’s nothing quite like the horror movie-esque video games in The Dark Pictures Anthology. They’re equal parts narrative-driven video game and campy scary movie, and they’re generally perfect for their annual fall release dates. This year’s addition of House of Ashes is no different, bringing in an actor or two that TV and film fans would recognize (primarily Ashley Tisdale this time around) and immediately putting the group of playable characters into a possibly deadly situation full of frights. As per usual, they also brought back veteran composer and horror expert Jason Graves (Dead Space, Tomb Raider, Moss) to complete his fifth terrifying soundtrack in the last six years for t...

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Unites ’80s Jams and a Killer Original Score

If you haven’t checked out the video game version of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy yet, it’s far better than you think it’s going to be. From the exciting combat to the gripping narrative and dialogue that’s way more emotionally powerful than pretty much anyone expected, Guardians is pretty much the full package as far as what one could want from an action-packed single-player linear title. Oh, and of course it has an absolutely incredible soundtrack to go along with it. With tracks ranging from the orchestral to the electronic to the ‘80s tunes you’ve come to expect from Star-Lord and his crew, Richard Jacques (Mass Effect, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, Headhunter) shows why he’s been one of the United Kingdom’s most sought-after musical minds for the past quarter-century. Plus there’s ...

Takin’ It Too Deep

Christian Slater and Lizzy caplan team up to voice the brilliant (unhinged) father and (on-the-edge) daughter Rand and Reagan Ridley, pivotal to running America’s shadow government, in Netflix’s new animated adult comedy, Inside Job.  The wild show is, at its heart, an office and family comedy. It focuses on Reagan’s work life, leading a team at Cognito Inc. that creates conspiracies and president-replacing robots (ROBOTUS), and her dysfunctional relationship at home with her father (who was forced out of the company, and now threatens the organization’s very existence by vlogging on YouTube).  Slater, 52, and Caplan, 39, spoke with SPIN about getting into the headspace of mad geniuses behind the running of the greatest superpower in the world, and tackling all sorts of conspirac...
