Earlier this year, Juicy J and DJ Paul planned a mini reunion tour for Three 6 Mafia. Like all other musical events in the US, those plans were derailed because of COVID-19. However, unlike nearly every other touring musician besides The Chainsmokers and Smash Mouth, the legendary Memphis rap group are planning to return to the stage later this year for a socially distanced arena concert. Juicy J and DJ Paul have announced that they’ll be performing an indoor (!) show at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY on December 11th. In an Instagram video promoting the event, Three 6 Mafia call it the “first indoor arena concert in the country since the pandemic”. The phrase “socially distanced arena show” might sound oxymoronic, but the group are trying to make safety a priority. “Make sure you wear a ...
Showtime announced last week that a limited series revival of Dexter was on the way. Now, further details on Dexter Morgan’s comeback have been revealed by original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who is returning for the revival’s 10 episodes. The Dexter revival is set to pick up where the TV series left off, but in such a way that redeems the disappointing eighth and last season. If you’ll recall (spoiler), the beloved crime drama wrapped up with Dexter faking his own death in dramatic fashion so that he could live life as a secret lumberjack in Oregon. That finale episode left many longtime viewers scratching their heads or downright disgruntled. As Uproxx and NME point out, Phillips doesn’t plan to rewrite or reimagine that series finale with some kind of cop-out “it was all a dre...

A new Ariana Grande album is imminent. The pop star coyly announced the news on Twitter on Wednesday, simply tweeting, “i can’t wait to give u my album this month.” Grande released her triumphant fourth album, Sweetener, in August 2018. Just six months later, she returned with its follow-up, the equally massive thank u, next, which ranked as our fifth favorite album in all of 2019. In the year-plus since then, she’s toured the world over, released a live album, and collaborated on tracks with Justin Bieber (“Stuck With U”) and Lady Gaga (“Rain on Me”). She most recently popped up at the MTV VMAs to perform “Rain on Me” with Gaga. Last month, Grande hinted at new music by posting a brief snippet of a vocal track to Twitter. In a subsequent tweet, she revealed she was “turning in these ...

Ever since Nathan Apodaca jumped on his skateboard, with a jug of Ocean Spray Cran-Raspberry in hand, and began singing along to Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”, the band’s music has been surging up the charts. Last week, “Dreams” re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 21, marking Fleetwood Mac’s first such appearance on the chart since 1977. And now, the album from which the singles comes from, Rumours, has climbed all the way into the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 Album Charts. According to Billboard, Rumours earned 33,000 equivalent album units in the US in the week ending October 15, good enough for the No. 7 spot on this week’s charts. Upon its release in 1977, the album spent a record-setting 31 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but this marks Rumours’ first Top 10...
Back in June, Becca Mancari released her excellent debut album, The Greatest Part, via Captured Tracks. Today, our former Artist of the Month has shared a remixed version of the single “Lonely Boy” by none other than our former CoSign, UK electro-pop artist Shura, Although The Greatest Part was produced by Paramore’s Zac Farro, Mancari’s sound has more roots in indie music than pop or pop-punk. The original version of “Lonely Boy” is a catchy indie rock track with a bumpy bassline and a dreamy hook, but there’s a spaciness to the song that translates really well in Shura’s dance-pop context. In the remix, the main hook of the tune remains intact, but Shura adds some clubby flair and an epic drum breakdown that transitions into a dazzling synth melody. In their respective press st...
All work and no play can make anyone feel dull, especially in 2020. That’s why Consequence of Sound, Morgan MFG, and The Losers’ Club invite all Chicagoans to Room 237, a new, massive pop-up experience and lounge inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Starting October 15th, the West Loop hot spot will be transformed into The Overlook Hotel, where guests can take a tour of its haunted rooms, enjoy some themed cocktails in the Gold Room, and, of course, get lost in its giant hedge maze. The immersive experience was co-created by Heaven Malone, who designed the original Gold Room pop-up bar that entertained thousands of guests throughout the Winter of 2018 at Chicago’s The Rookery. This time, he went bigger. “During the shutdown, I was isolated in my apartment with all of these Room 237 p...
While Phoebe Bridgers has set the gold standard for pandemic-era digital performances, the Punisher singer knows the importance of physical music venues. On Saturday, she joined Foo Fighters and Miley Cyrus at #SOSFest, an online festival raising money for venues impacted by the pandemic. Performing from the Troubadour in Los Angeles, Bridges and her band delivered a seven-song set with help from a few special guests. Conor Oberst joined Bridgers for the Punisher track “Halloween” and then stuck around for “Dylan Thomas” from the duo’s collaborative album as Better Oblivion Community Center. Christian Lee Hutson performed “Lose This Number” from his Bridgers-produced album Beginners, and Charlie Hickey got time under the spotlight to play one of his own song. Rounding out the setlist were ...
All of those sentimental life lessons from Home Improvement clearly went over the head of star Zachery Ty Bryan. Onetime King Crimson singer-bassist Gordon Haskell has died at the age of 74. The sad news was announced via the musician’s Facebook page, but no cause of death was given. “It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gordon, a great musician and a wonderful person who will be sadly missed by so many,” read the statement on Haskell’s passing. Haskell had a brief tenure in King Crimson during the pioneering UK prog-rock band’s early years. He was a classmate and teenage bandmate of founder Robert Fripp in the group League of Gentlemen, and was recruited to sing lead vocals on the song “Cadence and Cascade” on King Crimson’s second album, 1970’s In the Wake of Poseidon. Greg Lake sang lead on all of the LP’s other tracks. After Lake left the band to form Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, Has...
The Beach Boys have seen better days. On Sunday, Mike Love’s Frankenstein twist on the legendary outfit performed at an Orange County campaign benefit in support of Donald Trump. Former members Brian Wilson and Al Jardine were not fans. “We have absolutely nothing to do with the Trump benefit today in Newport Beach. Zero,” Wilson and Jardine told Variety through a spokesperson. “We didn’t even know about it and were very surprised to read about it in the Los Angeles Times.” True to the spirit of Trump, the event was a ghoulish display of garish festivities. Tickets ranged from a jaw-dropping $2,800 per donor to a downright criminal $150,000 a couple for co-chair status with The Beach Boys at the center. Of course, every self-respecting fan of The Beach Boys knows this isn’t really The Beac...
