Square Enix Sells Three Western Studios and Titles Such As ‘Tomb Raider,’ ‘Deus Ex’

Square Enix has sold three of its major Western game studios — the U.S.-based Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal— to Swedish gaming group Embracer. The deal encompasses the intellectual property rights to its game franchises, such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex and Thief and Legacy of Kain. It also includes the rights to “more than 50 back-catalog games.” Embracer’s purchase of the three studios amounts to $300 million USD “on a cash and debt free basis, to be paid in full at closing.” The acquisition includes 1,100 employees across the three studios and eight global locations. Ridge Racer, a racing video game series first released in 1993, may soon be making its return on PlayStation 5. While the inaugural game was designed for Namco System 22 hardware, it was adapted for the PlayStation a few years later. As Sony plans to bring older titles — including games dating back to the PS1, PS2 and PlayStation Portable — to the PS5, it appears that Ridge Racers 2 will receive a relaunch. An update to the original version of the game, Ridge Racers 2 was made for arcade systems and introduced a multiplayer mode and features such as rear-view mirrors. Sony Will Reportedly Handle Creating PlayStation Plus Game Demos Itself

Earlier this week, it was reported that Sony had requested that developers create time-limited demos for its revamped PlayStation Plus service. Launching on June 13, the Game Pass alternative will already offer top-tier subscribers more than 700 titles, but it seems that Sony wanted to entice new subscribers with longer, exclusive demos. Per this policy, Sony asked developers to release free demos for games that cost over $34 USD. The company shared the news through its internal developer portal, but not as an official announcement to third-party partners, Kotaku reported.
