Sean “P. Diddy” Combs never does anything halfway. On Friday (Nov. 4) the music/fashion/sprits/media mogul announced that he plans to make a major investment in the legal marijuana game with a $185 million deal to buy licensed weed operations in three states. If approved, the deal would create the nation’s largest Black-owned and licensed cannabis company, a platform Diddy said he wants to use to increase Black participation in the field. “It’s diabolical,” Combs, 53, told the Wall Street Journal about his desire to get into the pot business to help address long-running inequities that have seen Black people disproportionately arrested and jailed for marijuana crimes even as they make up a “tiny” percentage of the market for legal weed. “How do you lock up communities of people, break down...
Drake and 21 Savage’s “Jimmy Cooks” collaboration conquers two more Billboard radio charts this week with coronations on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rap Airplay lists. Though the song arrived in June, promotional efforts have ramped up in recent weeks, with the song’s official music video release on Oct. 22 and the pair’s joint album, Her Loss, released Friday (Nov. 4). (“Cooks” does not appear on the album.) “Jimmy Cooks” jumps 5-1 to crown Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay following a 9% increase in plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored mainstream R&B/hip-hop radio stations in the week ending Oct. 30, according to Luminate. With the leap, Drake replaces himself at No. 1 for a seventh time in his career, as “Jimmy” ousts Future’s “Wait for U,” featu...
After years of trying to sell his hard-charging sound to Canadian country radio, Cory Marks had finally found his hit song and opening tour slot to propel his career forward in 2020. The year prior he released his first bankable hit, “Outlaws and Outsiders” — an anthemic track produced by his new label boss and collaborator Ivan Moody from Five Finger Death Punch with features from country legend Travis Tritt and rock icon Mick Mars of Mötley Crüe. The song hit No. 1 on Billboard’s rock chart and helped earn him an opening slot for Canadian country legend Gord Bamford’s 2020 tour. Then the pandemic hit, and the breakout career of the former Royal Military College hockey player was temporarily put on ice. But after a three-year wait, Marks is returning to the road, opening for a...
Masego is giving listeners a feel for his forthcoming album with “Say You Want Me,” the first cut to be released from the project. Arriving with a music video directed by Victor Alex Barco, the song layers the Jamaican-American singer’s sultry vocals over a bouncy dance beat. On the track, Masego leads with a player attitude, singing about leading women while still vying for their attention. Background vocals are provided by Ambré, Ari PenSmith, Mannywellz and Destin Conrad. The accompanying visual was shot in Los Angeles and celebrates the vibrance and kinship of the city’s Black community. “Masego is the name I want to hear you say when you mention life, music, black romance and dance,” Masego said of the track. As he begins the process of rolling out his new LP, for which a title has ye...

Joji has released his new album, Smithereens, out today via 88rising. Following 2020’s Nectar, the new LP hears the singer continue to evolve his distinctive style of melancholic ballads. On tracks like “Die For You,” the singer pensively reflects on lost love, a recurring theme throughout his discography. Crooning over simple piano chords punctuated by the cymbal, Joji reveals that although she’s moved on to be happy without him in her life, he’s still willing to die for her. The album is also home to his hit single “Glimpse of Us.” Other standouts include the somber “Before The Day Is Over” and the vibey “NIGHT RIDER,” the latter of which sees Joji experiment more with production. Smithereens is cut into two sides: Side A marks a maturation of Joji’s introspective ballads, whereas Side B...
