Starting next spring, a Norweigian company will begin housing some of the world’s most important music recordings in a doomsday vault located between Norway and the North Pole. Oslo-based Elire Management Group recently spoke with Billboard about their grand ambitions to preserve recordings varying from pop acts like the Beatles to Australian indigenous music for at least 1,000 years. Named the Global Music Vault, it will share the same safeguards as the Arctic World Archive and the Global Seed Vault, two preexisting facilities located underground in the Svalbard archipelago. As the financer of the project, Elire is currently negotiating with the Norwegian company Piql to use their PiqlFilm format, based on binary coding and high-density QR codes written onto special durable optical film. ...
Miley Cyrus rocked the stage on the 4th of July with a fitting cover of the Cocteau Twins’s “Heaven or Las Vegas” at the Resorts World casino in Las Vegas. At the grand opening of the new resort, Cyrus introduces the song with a joke referencing some of her younger fans being annoyed that she keeps covering old songs. “I’m gonna sing a song that no one fucking knows,” Cyrus said. “But you will know it after tonight. And I’ve seen the tweets: ‘Stop doing covers!’” Miley can’t stop, and she won’t stop. A fan managed to film the performance, which you can watch below. The Cocteau Twins posted on Facebook promoting the cover, captioning “Surprise, surprise!” During the Independence Day concert, Cyrus sang more covers from other classic artists including The Guess Who’s “American Woman,” Blondi...
Bad Bunny reflects on the passage of time on his new song “De Museo.” This is the Puerto Rican star’s latest single, following “Yonaguni” from last month. “De Museo” is a laid-back trip through Latin trap, with Bad Bunny measuring the man he is now against the (less well-paid) man he used to be. “Pasa el tiempo y yo sigo aquí/ Un hermano no se traiciona, la familia nunca abandona,” he sings, which could be translated to, “Time passes and I’m still here/ A brother doesn’t betray, family never abandons.” He does catch himself aging, rapping, “El tiempo pasa, pasa y no se detiene/ Ya me estoy poniendo viejo y ayer era un nene” (“Time passes, it passes and it doesn’t stop/ I’m already getting old and yesterday I was a little kid”), but he doesn’t see himself as diminished. ...

Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd has made the most of his time during the pandemic. Not only did he record a new album with his band, he became a fully certified phlebotomist, also known as a health professional who draws blood from patients for medical testing. While speaking with SiriusXM host Eddie Trunk about Buckcherry’s recently released ninth studio album, Hellbound, Todd discussed the various activities he engaged in during lockdown. “I got into action. I’m not one that really sits around for too long. I never get on the pity potty. I just go, ‘Okay, what am I gonna do with this time? I’ve got all this time. How can I utilize it wisely?’ And making the Hellbound record was one of them.” He went on to say that he participated in a lot of addiction recovery Zoom meetings and started pla...

Morrissey’s big mouth has struck again: In a new interview conducted by his nephew Sam Esty Rayner, the outspoken singer referred to the pandemic as “Con-vid” and compared government-imposed restrictions as akin to slavery. His comments came as part of a lengthy interview designed to promote his upcoming album, Bonfire of Teenagers. But Morrissey and Rayner dedicated much of the interview to lamenting about the state of Britain during the pandemic. “The bigger problem is that nobody can any longer agree with anyone else, and this is the main outcome of Con-vid,” Morrissey commented. “It has brought the worst out in people, and we weren’t ever in this together. We are deprived of seeing and hearing other people, and above all, you want to be with others who see and hear what you see and hea...
Richard Ashcroft has informed fans that he’s pulled out of his scheduled appearance at the UK’s Tramlines Festival because of the event’s government imposed COVID-19 restrictions. Tramlines announced last week that the full-capacity event, set for July 23rd-25th would be part of England’s Events Research Programme. That means the fest will be under certain restrictions to help the UK government test the safety of returning to full-scale events. Ashcroft is apparently not down with that, as the former Verve rocker has a standing “no ERP events” policy. “I had informed my agent months ago I wouldn’t be playing concerts with restrictions,” Ashcroft wrote in an Instagram post. “The status of the festival was one thing when I signed up for it, but, sadly was forced to become something else. It ...
Rush singer-bassist Geddy Lee is mourning the loss of his mother, Mary Weinrib, who passed away on Friday (July 2nd). Weinrib, a Holocaust survivor, died just weeks shy of her 96th birthday. Weinrib’s obituary tells a remarkable story of survival and perseverance. She grew up in a Jewish community in Poland, and was forced into concentration camps, including Auschwitz. After she was freed in 1945, she reunited with and married Morris Weinrib, whom she had fallen in love with while at Auschwitz. The couple moved to Toronto and opened a variety store, but Morris died suddenly in 1965, leaving Mary with three children to raise on her own. She was a big supporter of Geddy’s music career from the early days of Rush. As her obituary states, “When the first Rush album was released, Mary plastered...
Courtney Love recently launched a cover song series called Bruises of Love, in which she performs a selection of her songs that allowed her to “finally feel like myself again” after years of health issues. After kicking off the series last month by covering “California Stars”, the folk-rock staple from Wilco and Billy Bragg’s joint 1998 album Mermaid Avenue featuring lyrics by the late Woody Guthrie, Love has now uploaded a rendition of Britney Spears’ “Lucky”. Watch below. As Love pointed out prior to her performance, the Max Martin-penned song from Spears’ 2000 album, Oops!… I Did It Again, is challenging to play due to some “funky” chords. The timing of the song’s release is likely not coincidental, as Love was interviewed for Ronan Farrow and Jia Tolentino for their newl...
