Dave Grohl Made a Superfan’s Dream Come True by Crashing His ‘Grohlathon’ Livestream Jam Session

Performing covers on Instagram Live isn’t a new quarantine phenomenon. But for Pat Finnerty, his Dave Grohl-dedicated show finally caught the attention of the one person he was hoping for. The 40-year-old Scranton, Penn.-based musician started “Grohlathon,” a 24-hour IG Live performance from his West Philly studio apartment, on Saturday (Aug. 15), in hopes he could eventually get Grohl to sing Sting‘s part on Dire Straits‘ 1985 No. 1 hit “Money for Nothing.” Before this weekend, a cardboard cutout of the Foo Fighters frontman was the closest thing he could get to the celebrity appearance he wanted so badly on The Pat Finnerty Show, per his Instagram handle, that he’s been putting on for the last five months. “My whole f&#...

Supreme Court Asked to Review ‘Stairway to Heaven’ Fight

Is the Supreme Court ready to make music history? One petitioner is giving nine justices of the high court such an opportunity while hardly being subtle about it. Here are the opening notes from a new cert petition: “It is fitting, perhaps, that the future of music copyright law be decided by a case about rock ‘n’ roll’s most iconic song, ‘Stairway to Heaven.’” The petition comes from Michael Skidmore, trustee for the Randy Craig Wolfe Trust — which is to say he’s representing an interest once belonging to Randy “California” Wolfe, singer-songwriter for the rock band Spirit. Wolfe authored a song “Taurus,” which many observers see as being extremely similar in structure to the opening of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.&#...

The Killers dropped their “Dying Breed” single today (Aug. 14) ahead of their sixth studio album Imploding the Mirage, which is out next Friday, Aug. 21 via Island Records. The rock band first teased the song during an April 24-dated Instagram Live, but frontman Brandon Flowers told NME that the words might be some of the “most romantic” ones he’s ever written about his wife and muse Tana Mundkowsky. “I like the idea of where me and my wife have gotten to and where we headed,” Flowers told NME. “An overriding theme of this record is asking the question, ‘Can two become one?’ I know it’s old-fashioned, but it’s my life. It’s probably the prettiest or most romantic lyric I’ve ever written.&#...

They’ll Probably Never Make A ‘Midnight Sun’ Movie, But We’ve Dreamt Up the Soundtrack Just in Case

By now, you’ve had a little over a week to dive into Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, the long-awaited companion novel to 2005’s Twilight. And if you’re like us, then you’re already foaming at the mouth for a feature film starring everyone’s favorite sparkling vampires. The Twilight franchise is also known for its stellar soundtracks, which, after the first film, featured all-original songs recorded just for the movies. Like the Twilight soundtrack, it stands to reason that a Midnight Sun soundtrack could feature a combination of existing and original songs, so we’ve imagined what that could look like. Also, while series stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have been outspoken about their distaste for the films over the years, we will remind you that Pattinson seems to hav...

Tom Morello Sets Autobiography ‘Whatever It Takes’

Tom Morello, the guitar hero and political activist who lit the fuse with Rage Against the Machine, Prophets of Rage and others, will tell it the way he sees it in a new autobiography, Whatever It Takes. In the blurb accompanying the book announcement, Morello says Whatever It Takes is “about a lifelong mission. A mission that more often can be felt rather than articulated. There are clues to the nature of the mission in the guitar riffs, the crazy solos, the lyrics, and in the shared sweat and solidarity of friends and comrades onstage and off.” {“nid”:”9420680″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”Tom Morello, Los Van Van, Ozomatli & 60 More to Perform at Concert for Cuba”,”relative_path”:”\/articles\/columns...
