Toyota may be expanding its future performance flagship lineup with a targa-top variant of the highly anticipated GR GT. According to a new report from the Japanese publication Magazine X, an open-roof model is currently in development alongside the standard coupe. The variant would allegedly utilize a removable roof panel to serve as a spiritual successor to the iconic A80 Supra Aero Top from the 1990s. While the news remains unconfirmed by the brand itself, introducing a pop-top option allows Toyota to compete directly with exotic open-top rivals in the premium supercar segment.
Beyond the targa configuration, the report suggests a more extreme tuned version of the GR GT is also in the works. Industry speculation points toward a track-focused GRMN model incorporating advanced aerodynamic components previously seen on recent GT3 race car development mules. Japanese sources indicate the core vehicle will boast an all-aluminum frame paired with a front-mounted 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and a rear transaxle housing a hybrid electric motor. This advanced powertrain setup is projected to produce system outputs exceeding 640 horsepower and massive torque figures.
The production strategy for the GR GT is expected to mirror the extreme exclusivity of the legendary Lexus LFA. Rumors suggest Toyota plans to manufacture only around 500 units globally and keep the price tag under the 30 million yen mark. Sales will reportedly be conducted directly through the Gazoo Racing division rather than standard dealer networks. Prospective buyers might even face a strict vetting process or interview with company representatives to secure an allocation. Enthusiasts eager to see the specialized Aero Top and GRMN editions will need significant patience, as official announcements for the derivative models are not predicted until 2027 or later.
