The Ekiti State Police Command has dispelled reports that armed Fulani bandits had stormed Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The state’s Commissioner of Police, Tunde Mobayo, said it is important to allay the fear that engulfed residents of the town when the news made the rounds on Wednesday. A report had trended online on Wednesday that a truck loaded with Hausa-Fulani men, all armed with AK-47 rifles and other weapons, had arrived at the Shasha market, along Ikere Road in Ado Ekiti. Mobayo, in a statement signed by the Command’s spokesman, ASP Sunday Abutu, and made available to reporters on Wednesday night, explained that the report was concocted by purveyors of fake news, and should be disregarded by residents of the town. The statement, entitled “No Armed Hausa/Fulani Invaded Shasha Marke...
Environmental groups hailed Biden’s first 100 days in office as a landmark for climate action, and he has followed up with a flurry of green initiatives promoting offshore wind farms, long-distance transmission lines for renewable power, more energy-efficient buildings and appliances, more fuel-efficient vehicles and more climate-conscious financial regulation. But the $2.5 trillion American Jobs Plan is clearly the centerpiece of Biden’s climate agenda, proposing about $1 trillion for wind, solar, electric vehicles and other accelerants for the clean energy transition. Now climate activists are worried that Biden will throw those investments overboard to mollify Republicans and Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, the coal-friendly centrist Democrat whose vote can essentially decide what...

Manchester United are willing to listen to offers for goalkeeper Dean Henderson amid concerns over his attitude, Football Insider claims. The England international started last season as the back-up goalkeeper behind David de Gea, but he became a regular during the back end of the campaign. Despite this, he was ignored for the Europa League final against Villarreal. The club lost via a penalty shoot-out, with De Gea failing to save any of the 11 spot-kicks. Ahead of next season, the club are planning a radical overhaul of the goalkeeping department, and they have already released Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira. The club are also open to offers for Henderson and De Gea but acknowledge that they may struggle to offload the latter due to his hefty £350,000-a-week wages. Henderson is said to b...
The US is to distribute half a billion shots of the Pfizer vaccine to nearly 100 poorer countries. Some 200 million doses will be given out this year and 300 million in 2022. It comes as US President Joe Biden said before leaving for the G7 summit in Cornwall that he would be announcing a vaccine strategy for the world. The US would pay for the doses at a “not-for-profit” price, according to the New York Times, which said the plan could be officially announced on Thursday. The shots will go to 92 lower-income countries and the African Union, sources told the Reuters news agency. Pfizer and the White House have so far not officially commented. America is well advanced in its vaccine rollout but campaigners have called for richer countries to do more to help protect developing nations. It’s ...
Earlier in the day, Heinrich tweeted insufficiently ambitious climate legislation “should not count on every Democratic vote,” and linked to a POLITICO article in which National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy acknowledged President Joe Biden might not get all of his loftier climate priorities, such as a clean energy standard, in eventual infrastructure legislation. Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) was even blunter in a tweet: “No climate, no deal,” he wrote. At the same virtual event, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) said he was “very confident” the Senate would ultimately be able to coalesce around an infrastructure package with a major climate title, including a clean energy standard. He added later he “agree[s] wholeheartedly” with Heinrich’s sentiment that Democratic ...
“After a comprehensive review of its options, and in consultation with its partner, the Government of Alberta, [TC Energy] has terminated the Keystone XL Pipeline Project,” the company said on its website. The statement comes after TC Energy announced in May it was taking a $2.2 billion writedown on its earnings to account for the pipeline project stalling. “Construction activities to advance the Project were suspended following the revocation of its Presidential Permit on January 20, 2021,” the company continued. “The Company will continue to coordinate with regulators, stakeholders and Indigenous groups to meet its environmental and regulatory commitments and ensure a safe termination of and exit from the Project.” TC Energy’s announcement is likely the final chapter in the Keystone XL s...
