Rule number 1 of dressing for the English winter? Never underestimate the outfit-transforming powers of a statement knit. It’s a tenet that is sure to become increasingly relevant as we enter our first autumn with the backdrop of social distancing and jumpers start to become a key source of creativity (especially if Zoom has anything to do with it). While in previous years coats were the hero item of the colder months, it feels as though the limitations on outdoor events and commuting will mean that it’s what lies beneath that gets all the attention. In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn officially starts on the 22nd of September, but we’ve been wearing boots since the end August if we’re being totally honest. And we’ve got many months of boot-wearing ahead of us—I wager six month’s worth of solid stomping time. The biggest of all of the boots is undeniably the ankle boot—it is the easiest style to wear with everything in your wardrobe. Great with jeans, dresses and skirts, it is usually the one item in your wardrobe you can guarantee you’ll get a lot of wear out of during the colder months. Which is why deciding on which one you want to invest in is important. How do you know which boot will have longevity in terms of your own personal style as well as ticking the on-trend box? This is where we come in. As we ...
London Fashion Week’s September 2020 season is taking a new form this year. What’s usually labelled as the Spring/Summer 2021 womenswear schedule will now be a gender-neutral showcase of both womenswear and menswear designs, which will include digital activations and physical presentations that adhere to government social-distancing guidelines. From Thursday, 17 Sept. (5 p.m. BST) to Tuesday, 22 Sept., londonfashionweek.co.uk will host the digital portion of London Fashion Week. You’ll be able to take a virtual front row seat to view and critique exclusive multimedia content curated by the British Fashion Council. It’s crucial to note that London Fashion Week September 2020 is not only gender-neutral but also a major push from the BFC to embrace a more sustainable f...
Kim Jones is poised to be the next king of fashion. The British designer and current artistic director of Dior Homme has been tapped by the luxury brand’s parent company LVMH as Fendi’s new womenswear artistic director. Jones succeeds Fendi’s previous creative director, the late Karl Lagerfeld, and replaces the house’s interim artistic director, Silvia Venturini Fendi, who will return her focus to accessories and menswear for the brand. Kim Jones has lead Dior’s menswear vision since 2018 and previously directed menswear at Louis Vuitton, which are both owned by LVMH. The Central Saint Martins alumnus will continue developing Dior’s menswear collections, while taking on a second role at Fendi womenswear. Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH, said in...
If you lived through the noughties, there is probably a very specific image in your head which comes to mind anytime anyone utters the word “bodycon.” It’s likely the depiction of Paris Hilton or a young Kim Kardashian dressed to the nines in sky-high heels and smoky-eyed makeup, wearing a figure-hugging bandage mini dress. As iconic as those styles may be, some twenty years later, the concept of bodycon has been reimagined, refreshed and given an entirely new meaning. As seen on the runways of Jacquemus, Bottega Veneta, Proenza Schouler and more, 2020’s take on bodycon is far less about restrictive materials and far more about flattering the figure in soft, comfortable fabrics. “Today’s version of bodycon is more elegant,” explained ...
Is it just us, or is applying heavy makeup the last thing you want to do at the moment? Not only it time-consuming, but it seems wasteful to use up our makeup reserves when we’re not venturing out as much as we normally would be. But what if you want to look like you’re wearing barely any makeup, but still want the comfort of some key products? We’ve been looking for ways to achieve a put-together makeup look with an effortless feel to it—and that requires just a few standout products. So who better to ask than some of the people who sport gorgeous and glowy natural-makeup looks every single day? We have reached out to some of our favourite beauty influencers to find out which products they use to create their natural-makeup looks. From dewy skin and b...
Do you buy a lot of vintage clothing or mainly secondhand interiors? ‘I have a few trophy pieces, like a Dior jacket, that I have as a beautiful piece of art almost, and I buy vintage tweed jackets and waistcoats. My autumn winter clothes tend to be more vintage, as I wear mens clothes in winter and a lot of vintage tailoring.’ Where do you shop the most? ‘I have found so many brands from being on Instagram, and I’m finding lots of little niche slow fashion brands, like Cabbages and Roses, Son de Flor and Little Women Atelier. I still have fun shopping, but I know myself very well now so it’s very rare that I will send anything back. I don’t buy lots, and when I buy things, I know exactly what I like. I don’t want to wear a new dress every time I take a photogra...
Stephanie Yeboah has always loved fashion. When she was young she’d watch runway shows on TV, loving the creativity, drama and the couture. She’d even tear out images from fashion magazines her older cousin had bought to create her own fashion paradise on her bedroom wall. But, it took a long time for Yeboah to find clothing that actually gave her the opportunity to express herself in the way that she wanted. Yeboah is plus size and, until relatively recently, many fashion brands assumed that women who are larger than a size 16 only wanted, in her words, “butterfly prints, smock dresses and empire lines”. Yeboah says she felt bound by those fashions, relegated to wearing items that really weren’t her style. Then her mum introduced her to ASOS Curve—the day she...
As a second-hand shopper, I spend a disproportionate amount of time thinking about one question: When does something actually become vintage? I don’t think there’s an exact equation to it, but it has been fascinating watching the trends I grew up with in the ‘90s start to be repurposed and embraced by Gen Z. (Welcome back, chokers, chain belts and tank tops.) Perhaps there is a cyclical waiting period that sees fashion trends loop back around and finally become cool again after 15 or 20 years. It’s a mystery. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. It begins with giving you back power. September is, without a doubt, one of my favourite months. June, July, and August are either too hot or disappointing, and October and November are too dark. But September is the middle ground—a truly perfect 30 days. Fashion-wise, it is the ideal time to wear your favourite pieces from summer but with a few additional layers for the autumnal months. And considering that most of us probably didn’t get the chance to showcase our favourite summer pieces this year, if you are heading back to the office, now is the time. Of course, coming up with outfit ideas isn’t always easy, so we’ve done some digging and found six ideal looks that work for home or the office. I’ve already professed my love of candles, but I found my collection mainly consisted of either pillar or those hand-poured into glass jars, so I decided to switch things up with a set of tapers. Their initial appeal was that they looked instantly fancy but what I found is that, when lit, they create a beautiful atmosphere and make the moment feel significantly more special. They’re also great for adding height to a tablescape, which makes it all the more visually exciting and appealing. What’s more, I’ve found that most taper candles are unscented, and therefore don’t create a fragrance clash with the food I’m serving. “A perfectly lit taper candle can be quite memorising,” says Tony Jack, founder of Fairholme candles. “The way the wax drips down the candle and onto a candlestick holder o...
I’m going to make an assumption here that you own a white T-shirt or a white shirt, which means that, unless you’re purposely going for the showing-off-the-black-bra-underneath vibe, you need a decent nude bra. However—and let’s be honest—the term “nude” has often referred to pale skin tones rather than all skin tones. Thankfully, plenty of lingerie brands have moved on from this (even though there’s a long way to go for others) and there are now more brands than ever that offer a decent range of nude underwear for all skin tones. There’s Heist, which is personally one of my favourite places to shop tights, but it’s also great for underwear. From shapewear to bras, the brand offers so many gorgeous pieces that you don...
