Lamborghini’s Countach Returns as a Hybrid 802-Horsepower Supercar

Lamborghini’s Countach Returns as a Hybrid 802-Horsepower Supercar

Lamborghini has unveiled its new Countach LPI 800-4, a contemporary limited-edition supercar paying respect to its poster-child predecessor’s status as one of the most revered whips in automobile history.

“The Countach LPI 800-4 is a visionary car of the moment, just as its forerunner was,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said in a statement. “[The car] pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade.”

Released in honor of the 50th anniversary of the original version, the Countach LPI 800-4, with LPI standing for Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido, or Longitudinal Posterior Hybrid, arrives equipped with a V12 engine and a 48V electric motor, providing the updated model with the age-old engine growl that came with the initial car. With approximately 802 combined horsepower from its aspirated powerplant and electric motor to its four-wheel drive transmission, the new Countach produces a 0-60 mph time of 2.8 seconds, a 0-124 mph time of 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 221 mph.

Carbon fiber primarily comprises the exterior chassis and body, while also making up components of the front splitter, engine bonnet cover intakes, rocker panels and lining the front and side-view mirrors. Lamborghini utilized 3D-printing technology to create movable air vents, while also incorporating a futuristic, “photochromatic” roof with the ability to shift between solid and transparent viewing with one button.

The automaker will only make 112 units of the Countach LPI 800-4. A price point has not been disclosed, though deliveries will begin in the first quarter of 2022.

Elsewhere, Bugatti has entered production for its Bolide hyper sports car.
