London’s Notting Hill Carnival is Back IRL for the First Time Since 2019

This weekend, the world’s (second) biggest party returns to the streets of west London for the first time since 2019. Notting Hill Carnival, a British summertime institution, attracted up to two million partygoers annually before the pandemic put a pause to its IRL plans. A relocation into the digital world failed to scratch the collective itch for a true “carni” experience and, three years on — with social distancing a distant memory in the UK — organizers are anticipating a record attendance. As ever, Carnival’s main events fall on the Sunday and Monday of the August bank holiday weekend, with the former typically noted for its family-friendly feel. However, the unofficial start of this year’s festivities is being marked by the National Panorama Steelband Competition — the only ticketed ...

Rina Sawayama Reflects with emotional track “Phantom”

Rina Sawayama has released a new track titled “Phantom.” The new arrival marks the fourth song shared from the Japanese-British musician’s forthcoming album, Hold the Girl. The emotional track reflects on her life and previous actions of trying to appease others. In the newfound clarity, the artist recognizes the strength in loving herself and putting her own desires at the forefront. “If I could talk to you/I’d tell you not to rush, you’re good enough/You don’t have to lose/What makes you you, still got some growing to do,” sings Sawayama on the track. Similar in emotional poignancy to her previous release, “Catch Me In The Air,” it appears that Hold the Girl is gearing up to be the artist’s most sentimental and empowering project to date. “I realized as an adult that I have spent my...

Muse’s Will of the People is Vague, Jumbled, and Unimaginative: Review

At the end of Muse‘s third studio album, 2003’s Absolution, is a powerful ballad that, to this day, is one of the band’s best ever creations: “Ruled By Secrecy.” The song, rooted in Matt Bellamy‘s dueling arpeggiated pianos, is a patient exploration of an individual’s lack power against an unknown societal force, a stirring call to those who “are working so hard/ but [they’re] never in charge,” and a nod of suspicion towards society’s manipulative leaders. “Ruled By Secrecy,” along with the other dramatic, apocalyptic themes of Absolution, marked a new thematic highway for the British trio, and it’s one that they’ve followed staunchly since the album’s release in 2003. Black Holes and Revelations came next with a greater emphasis on sci-fi, but still found the band using a s...
