Alan Elliott, producer of the 2018 Aretha Franklin documentary Amazing Grace, has launched a lawsuit against Neon for acquiring the film’s distribution rights fraudulently, among other claims of mismanagement and suspicious accounting. In the New York Supreme Court suit, viewed by Pitchfork, Elliott’s Amazing Grace Movie, LLC alleges that Neon and its CEO, Tom Quinn, began “with a false and premature press announcement that Neon had already acquired those rights when in fact it had not.” Elliott claims that, after “strong-arming” Amazing Grace into a distribution deal, Neon stifled the film’s reach. “Neon resorted to good old ‘Hollywood accounting’ and continues to kneecap the Picture’s distribution in order to avoid paying performance bonuses to Plaintiff and the Picture’s producers,” the...

The Game has released his new album Drillmatic: Heart vs. Mind, which features 31 songs and a stacked list of big name guests. It also includes a new song called “The Black Slim Shady,” which is an over-10-minute elaborate diss track targeting Eminem. Throughout the song, the Game makes references to Eminem’s biggest hits, matching the rapper’s flow and parodying his history of pop cultural references while taking shots at him. Listen to the song below. The track begins with a skit where the Game is being driven by an Uber driver, who is revealed to be Matthew, the younger brother of the titular narrator in Eminem’s “Stan.” Matthew, as portrayed in “The Black Slim Shady,” is not a fan of Eminem’s more recent work. The Game, of course, becomes aggressive with Matthew, who drives the rapper ...
Nicki Minaj has never been one to tone down her wild side, but today, she’s literally spelling it out for you. After teasing it on TikTok, the rapper has officially shared the new single “Super Freaky Girl” today, which prominently samples Rick James’ 1981 smash “Super Freak.” By the song’s title and, well, the fact that it’s Nicki Minaj, you can probably guess what “Super Freaky Girl” is about: “I can lick it, I can ride it/ While you slippin’ and sliding/ I can do all them little tricks and keep the dick up inside it,” she raps in the chorus (sorry, Mom and Dad) before giving us a spelling lesson. “He want a F-R-EEEEE-A-K.” There are a few humorous lines throughout the song, like: “Get me Rocky A$AP, word to Rih,” shouting out the new parents. And a personal favorite: “He said,...
This review was part of our coverage of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The Pitch: Emily (Aubrey Plaza) just can’t catch a break. She’s a college dropout, reeling from a felony aggravated assault conviction that follows her to every job interview, tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt weighing her down like a ball and chain. It’s calcified her to the world, approaching each new interview just waiting for the next reason she’ll be rejected. All she’s got to her name are her wits and a can of pepper spray. But a rare opportunity appears when a coworker at her degrading catering gig turns her onto a way to make some extra money: show up at a warehouse at the proper hour, perform a small-scale credit card scam with boosted flatscreens, and you earn $200 in an hour. You ...
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and The Game is doing everything short of bleaching his hair on the new 10-minute Eminem “diss” track “The Black Slim Shady.” The foremost Pick Me in hip-hop today has finally given up asking 50 Cent to reignite their mid-aughts feud. “Because 50 can’t rap, so I’ve gotta go a level up and challenge the better rapper,” he rationalized in an April interview on Fresh Pair, leaving out the part where 50 Cent was too busy building a TV empire to respond. “Nobody really takes shots at Eminem off this pre-conceived notion that he’s better than everybody. Well I want action, and I want it today.” You’d be forgiven for wondering what kind of “action” he’s looking for, especially after he added, “If you’re a ‘rap god,’ co...
