Song of the Week: Megan Thee Stallion Delivers an Ode to Perseverance with “Her”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify Top Songs playlist. For our favorite new songs from emerging artists, check out our Spotify New Sounds playlist. This week, Megan Thee Stallion reminds us all exactly who she is.  “I don’t care if these bitches don’t like me, ‘cause, like, I’m pretty as fuck,” Megan Thee Stallion asserts in the opening lines to “Her,” with all the casual matter-of-factness of a happy hour gossip session. But, jokes aside, how could she even have the energy to care? Though her consistent string of feel-good, booty-shaking anthems — and her astonishing ascent to hip-hop royalty — would have you convinced otherwise, the H-Town Hottie’s personal li...

Director Katie Aselton on Moving From Mumblecore to Mack and Rita

In Los Angeles, it feels like everyone wants to be young — except for Mackenzie “Mack” Martin (Elizabeth Lail), a 30-year-old woman who’s ready to skip to her senior citizen days and live her best life. Cue some magical realism (via an ad hoc past lives regression machine/tanning bed), and Mack finds her consciousness now inside a 70-something woman who starts going by Rita (Diane Keaton). It’s a fun, 2022-esque spin on high-concept body-swap classics like Big and Freaky Friday, which did mark a big change from director Katie Aselton’s past experiences as a filmmaker. While Katie Aselton’s not a first-time director, she tells Consequence that she was eager to take on this project because “I hadn’t done a full-fledged comedy as a director, so I was really excited to lean into that.” Plus, s...

M.I.A. Skewers Influencer Culture on New Song “Popular”: Stream

M.I.A. takes on influencer culture with the release of her new single “Popular,” the latest preview of her upcoming album MATA. The track arrives with a creepy music video starring an “influencer-bot-in-training” fittingly named M.A.I. Over an uptempo dance beat propelled forward by tribal drums and celebratory horns, the British-Tamil artist sarcastically regurgitates empty phrases that often pour out of the mouths of influencers. “Love me like I love me,” she sings on the chorus. “Suddenly it’s about me/ You wanna be around me/ ‘Cause I love myself/ I’m living my best life.” In the music video, M.I.A. trains her robot counterpart by showing M.A.I. how to dance more fluidly and rap along to “Popular.” At one point, that means reducing the influencer bot’s screen time. By the end...

M.I.A. Twerks and Kills Her Robotic Likeness in ‘Popular’ Video

M.I.A. has shared her second single of 2022, “Popular,” ahead of her upcoming sixth studio album, MATA. “Popular” is an ode to the pressures of keeping up with appearances and the Kafka-esque onslaught of social media. The video plays with this idea via an M.I.A. “influencer-bot” called M.A.I. learning all of M.I.A.’s movements. [embedded content][embedded content] With a creepy plastic face that looks like M.I.A., M.A.I. practices dance moves, selfie-taking, and smoking cigarettes to be more “Popular,” just like Glenda lending a mirror to Elphie. But poor M.A.I. is killed by M.I.A. at the end when she shoots her dummy with a water gun (apparently, like the Wicked Witch of the West, robots in M.I.A.’s Oz are impaired by water.) Recorded in London, Los Angeles, Italy, Bali, and Jakarta, MAT...

SEGA Says It Won’t Delay ‘Sonic Frontiers’ to Make More Improvements

Though fans were delighted by SEGA‘s announcement of Sonic Frontiers back in December last year, the subsequent trailers have left many dissatisfied with how the game looks and plays, with many criticizing it for its lack of engaging gameplay and bland world design. Unfortunately, it now also appears that the studio has no intention to postpone the game’s 2022 release in order to make more improvements to address fans’ concerns. “We do not consider postponing the launch at this point,” the studio’s senior EVP Koichi Fukazawa replied in an official English translation of the Q&A. “Within the communication with users, we intend to reflect the parts that can be reflected within the development timeline and to build empathy with users. Sonic IP is a mainstay title we will sell over th...

With Breaking Bad‘s spin-off series Better Call Saul coming to end, the franchise’s creator Vince Gilligan has been reflecting on his time with the two projects, and he has now revealed that he actually wanted to make a Grand Theft Auto-styled video game based around Jesse Pinkman and Walter White. Appearing on a recent episode of Inside the Gilliverse, the writer and director said that at one point, he was in talks to adapt Breaking Bad into a game but the idea just never took off. “I’m not much of a video game player, but how can you not know Grand Theft Auto?” Gilligan said on the podcast. “I remember saying to the guys—[who are] off running Apple now…who said yes originally to Breaking Bad — ‘Who owns Grand Theft Auto? Can’t you have a module, can’t there be a&...

Electronic Pop Duo Sylvan Esso Is Open to Experimentation on New LP ‘No Rules Sandy’

Less than two years after the release of Free Love LP, Sylvan Esso has returned with its fourth full-length studio album. No Rules Sandy sees the indie pop duo step away from flashy production and lead with cathartic and introspective songwriting. “I want everything to feel like something you’ve heard before, but presented in a way you’ve never heard,” Sanborn described the new LP. The duo — consisting of Nick Sanborn and Amelia Meath — recorded No Rules Sandy in early 2022 in just three weeks while working out of a Los Angeles rental home. Additional recording took place at the duo’s studio in its home state of North Carolina. “Even if we weren’t feeling good, we would just sit down and try to make something,” Meath said. “Pretty much every day that we did that, we got a song that we like...
