Ghostface is officially coming back to Woodsboro. Today, Paramount and Spyglass announced that a sixth movie in the Scream franchise has been greenlit.
The news comes as little surprise, given the success of last month’s Scream, which brought the return of original stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette alongside a new set of Gen Z slasher victims. As the first film in Wes Craven’s genre-defining horror series since 2011’s Scream 4, the fifth movie briefly dethroned Spider-Man: No Way Home for a single weekend as the top movie in the box office upon its January 14th release.
While there’s no word yet on whether Sidney Prescott and her pals will return for the upcoming sequel — or any other casting, for that matter — Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be back as directors with James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick once again writing the script. Production on the new film is set to begin this upcoming summer.

“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators — and in the lineage Wes and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built — has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life,” said the directing duo in a statement.
Vanderbilt and Busick added their own celebratory thoughts in a separate statement: “Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor.”
In our review of the latest Scream movie, senior staff writer Clint Worthington praised the script for its wit while calling the film’s overly meta premise “too online.”
